Edirne

Edirne is located in the Thrace region of Turkey and is close to the Greek border. The Meriç River passes through the center of the city and forms the natural border between Turkey and Greece. Edirne’s history goes back to ancient times. The city was an important settlement during the Ancient Roman period and later became part of the Byzantine Empire. It joined the Ottoman lands with the conquest of the Ottoman Empire in the 14th century. During the Ottoman Empire, Edirne was the capital for a while. Therefore, there are many historical monuments and structures in the city. Also, the city is famous for the annual “Kırkpınar Oil Wrestling” (oil wrestling festival), which celebrates Turkish culture.
