Shumen
Located in the heart of the region, steeped in history, built where important trade routes intersect and close to all major transport arteries that favour its rapid development. This, combined with the diverse nature and excellent conditions for tourism, makes the region suitable for both vacation and permanent residence and business.
The city of Shumen was founded 3200 years ago. Over the centuries, it has always been the cradle of rich spiritual and material culture – Thracian, Roman, Byzantine, Bulgarian. Located equidistant from the first two capitals of the Bulgarian state – Pliska and Veliki Preslav, the city was the scene of events that led to a period of prosperity known as the Golden Age of the Bulgarian state. In the Ottoman period, the city was a fortified bastion of the empire, but at the same time one of the most active centers of the Bulgarian Renaissance. On May 11, 1813 the first Bulgarian celebration of the Saints Cyril and Methodius and the first theatrical performance took place in the city. In 1828 the first monastery school for girls was established, and in 1856 – the first Girls’ Class School and the first community center were founded.
In 1850 the first Bulgarian symphony orchestra was founded, and the list of things with which Shumen was first and leading for its time is endlessly long.
Today Shumen is the center of the district of the same name and a university town. Two of the most modern industrial zones in Bulgaria are growing on its territory, they attract a large number of Bulgarian and foreign investors. The city of Shumen is proud with the oldest brewery in the country – Shumensko Pivo and the largest producer of aluminum roller and press products on the Balkans – Alcomet.
The exceptional natural environments and rich cultural and historical heritage attract many tourists from the country and the whole world. As a symbol of Bulgarian statehood in 1981. on the Shumen Plateau, the spectacular memorial complex Founders of the Bulgarian State was erected, which has become one of the symbols of the city.
