Varna
Varna Municipality, the second largest in the country, is located in Northeast Bulgaria on the Black Sea coast. It is named after its administrative centre – the city of Varna, which is also the capital of Varna province. Commonly referred to as the Sea Capital of Bulgaria Varna is the biggest national Black Sea port and the economic, tourism, business, transport, educational and cultural centre in the region. It is a captivating blend of history, culture and modernity, which makes it one of the most popular tourist destination in Bulgaria and across Europe. It features unique cultural treasures and natural landmarks such as the “St. Assumption of the Mother of God” Cathedral, the Roman Thermae, the rock complex Aladzha Monastery and the desert-like rock phenomenon Pobiti kamani. The oldest processed gold in the world, dating from the period 4400-4200 BC was found in the Varna Necropolis. Varna is a prominent cultural scene, representing a vibrant mix of classics and contemporary art. It hosts a number of international events and festivals, the largest of which – IMF Varna Summer, that will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2026. In addition to being a city of cultural fame, Varna is a popular academic hub with its six universities and a strong youth and entrepreneurial spirit. Varna won the title of European Youth Capital 2017.
